Mainstreaming of Environmental Education in the Professional Education Courses

Abstract

This study pilot-tested the Professional Education lessons integrated with environmental concepts and principles using the DENR EE materials among the 35 third Teacher Education students of Bicol University College of Industrial Technology during the first semester of the school year 2016-2017. Data were gathered using a validated researcher-made Self-assessment Tool on Environmental Principles and a Test on Environmental Concepts and Principles consisting of modified identification and multiple- choice type of tests. Qualitative data were gathered through class observations, focus group discussions, and authentic assessment outputs of students. The t-test (10.51444) between the pre-test mean of 15.34 and the post-test mean of 20.49 showed a significant increase in the test at 0.01 level of significance. It is concluded that the EE integrated into the Professional Education lessons was found effective in enhancing the students' level of competence in terms of environmental concepts and principles. The effectiveness of the EE was also noted through improved skills, strengthened values, and actions of the students shown in the outputs and projects of the students. The institutionalization of the mainstreaming of Environmental Education in the Teacher Education curriculum is strongly recommended.
